The Magic of Oil Painting
Oil painting is a versatile and timeless medium that allows artists to express their creativity with depth and richness. The slow-drying nature of oil paints enables artists to blend colors seamlessly, creating a luminous effect that brings life to their artwork. With its ability to capture light and texture, oil painting is the perfect choice for capturing the ever-changing beauty of autumn.
Exploring the Autumn Palette
Autumn is a season of vibrant colors, from the fiery reds and oranges of falling leaves to the golden hues of harvest. When creating an autumn-themed oil painting, it's essential to embrace the rich palette of this season. Warm tones like burnt sienna, cadmium orange, and deep reds can be used to depict the changing foliage, while cooler shades like cerulean blue and viridian green can add depth and contrast to the composition.
Capturing the Play of Light
One of the most captivating aspects of autumn is the way sunlight filters through the changing leaves, casting a warm glow on the surroundings. As an oil painter, you have the opportunity to capture this magical interplay of light and shadow. Experiment with different brushstrokes and techniques to recreate the dappled light that dances through the trees, infusing your artwork with a sense of depth and atmosphere.
The Beauty of Still Life
Autumn is not only about the changing landscape but also the bountiful harvest that graces our tables. Incorporating still life elements into your oil painting can add a touch of nostalgia and warmth. Consider arranging a rustic basket filled with apples, pumpkins, or a bouquet of autumn flowers as the focal point of your composition. The juxtaposition of natural elements against a backdrop of fall foliage can create a visually striking and evocative piece of art.
Process
Did the drawing first in graphite and sprayed with fixative. Started with an underpainting of Golden Fluids Nickel Azo Yellow and Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold. Always checking on my values.
At this stage, experimented with the underpainting using Holbein Oil Quinacridone Opera for the dark values. A bit scary at this stage to get glow of the autumn.
Then washed it with Gamblin Transparent Red Oxide and Alizarin Crimson and rubbed all the areas with Gamsol to get the highlights leaving the white areas as it is.
Having done an album swatch of oil palette for reference is a huge help. My palette consists of Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue with Transparent Red Oxide as the prominent color.
