Allow me to share a personal experience that truly encapsulates the power and beauty of oil painting. Recently, I gifted a dear friend of mine and created a portrait that reflected her unique spirit.
We've known each other for more than two decades! So I wanted to create something really special and translate my soul as an artist and translate the beauty of my friend on a canvas. It has been indeed a challenge. The painting had gone through several stages. A bit scary to paint someone close to you. As an artist too, I recognized the immense responsibility and privilege bestowed upon me. Prior to putting brush to canvas, I spent time observing my friend in different settings, capturing her genuine moments of joy, contemplation, and vulnerability. This allowed me to truly understand her essence, beyond mere physical appearances.
Choosing a palette that echoed her vibrance and warmth, I embarked on the creation of her portrait. It was essential to depict not just her external beauty, but also the depth of her spirit and her inner grace. I wanted to create a portrait with a story. That she has bloomed into this amazing person, a friend, a dentist, a mother rolled into one.
Creating this portrait was a journey in itself. Messy beginnings, brushstroke after brushstroke and layers of paint. I wanted to create a certain 'glow' in the face thus started with a very bright acrylic spray paint for the underpainting. The idea of flowers didn't come at first. It birthed as I go along. I wanted to depict sakura flowers on the side where the light hits the face. She always bloom at any stage of life. Its quite a challenge to paint someone you know. I believe I did well in giving a soul to the portrait. It excites me to paint people and learn more about them. To translate it into a painting is such a joy to create.
I was nervous when she was opening the package. Upon unveiling the completed portrait, I was filled with joy seeing her reaction. Nothing beats a genuine reaction, my heart was full! Looking forward to create more portraits! I am grateful for my wonderful friend.
